Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging Acquires IONIC

Norcross, Ga. -- Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging, LLC announced that it has acquired all outstanding shares of IONIC Software, a geospatial software company headquartered in Liege, Belgium, as well as all the shares of the related American company IONIC Enterprise. Together, these companies are referred to as IONIC (

A global company, IONIC provides state-of-the art, enterprise geospatial technology with the most advanced service-oriented mapping available for web-based and distributed systems. IONIC’s strength in the defense, space, government and commercial enterprise sectors complements Leica Geosystems’ market presence and existing product portfolio.

IONIC’s versatile products provide a seamless interoperable spatial data infrastructure to securely catalog and serve geospatial information on the Internet, enabling users to publish, discover, access, integrate and apply spatial data. Driving the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards in the geospatial industry, IONIC’s powerful RedSpider product line has a comprehensive, service-oriented architecture, with a highly developed open standards-based JAVA/J2EE platform and development framework (API).

“RedSpider is built upon an extensive and interoperable OGC platform,” said Chris Tucker, CEO, IONIC Enterprise. “This creates an opportunity for more companies-even those who had not previously used geospatial technology-to apply geospatial information in their day to day business needs.”

Moving forward, the IONIC and Leica Geosystems product portfolios will be maintained and new solutions will be developed using existing technologies of both companies.

“The acquisition of IONIC brings another new, leading enterprise technology to the Leica Geosystems portfolio of solutions,” said Bob Morris, President and CEO, Leica Geosystems Geospatial Imaging. “This combined synergy supports our strategy in providing customers with a growing suite of enterprise-enabled solutions offering additional geoprocessing capabilities.”

With clients around the world, IONIC has a strong foothold in both the US and Europe with a growing strategic visibility in Asia/Pacific, further strengthening Leica Geosystems’ existing global presence.

“Pioneers in creating sustainable geospatial solutions, Leica Geosystems provides tremendous stability, encouraging continued innovation,” said Vincent Dessard, CEO, IONIC Software. “The RedSpider product line will enhance Leica Geosystems’ expertise in developing photogrammetry, remote sensing, and visualization solutions to much larger enterprise-wide markets.”

The acquisition was made for an undisclosed amount, with date of closing to be determined.
