Five Off-site Activities Announced for 20th Annual GIS in the Rockies Conference

Denver, Colorado –  The program committee for the 2007 GIS in the Rockies Conference announces five off-site activities in conjunction with the 20th Annual GIS in the Rockies Conference. These five events will take place on Friday, September 14, 2007 at various locations in the Denver metropolitan area. Transportation to events is the responsibility of each participant.

Brief descriptions of the five workshops are included below:

Tour of Jeppesen Aviation, Headquarters Building and GIS Department
Time: 9-10am; Cost: Free
*Parking Limited: Please carpool if possible- email tours@gisintherockies.org to find or provide a ride.

Visit with the Geospatial Data Management (GDM) group and take a tour of Jeppesen's Global Navigation Data Services department, where we receive and process government aeronautical source documents from around the world, and manage thousands of database and chart updates.

Wings Over the Rockies Museum, Fantasy of Flight Experience: Project Pilot!
Time: 10am to 1pm; Cost: $12 per person

Project Pilot is an intensive program. Participants experience basic functions of aircraft instruments and control systems and apply those lessons to flight in a computer flight simulator. This interactive tour includes ground school, planning a flight, then ‘flying’ this route between two geographic points on a computer flight simulator. Estimated time is 2-3 hours.

NOAA Tour: “Science on a Sphere”
Time: 1-3pm; Cost: Free

Tour the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations facilities in Boulder, CO. as a part of the “Science on a Sphere” tour.

Registration deadline: Friday, Sept 7th, because names must be provided to NOAA for security policies.

**Please note: For security reasons, we need to provide your name to NOAA by Friday, Sept 7th. Please submit it if it is not already included in your tour request. Also, if you are a non-US citizen, you must also provide your passport number, country of residence, country of birth, and date of birth.

Merrick Tour
Time: 2-4pm; Cost: Free

Tour Merrick’s headquarters in Aurora, Colorado. The Merrick & Company technical tour will consist of a brief presentation providing an overview of LiDAR data collection and data processing workflow, a tour of production facilities and a software demonstration of a typical project data delivery.

Trimble Field Demo with Lunch and mini Golf
Time: 10:30am-2pm; Cost: Free

Join Trimble and CompassTools at Family Sports Center miniature golf course to experience the new Juno ST Handheld, GeoXH Handheld, plus Trimble’s latest software, peripheral support and learn what the ultimate GIS data collection solutions really feel like. CompassTools will be providing lunch.

The 2007 conference will be held September 12 – 14, 2007 at INVESCO Field at Mile High stadium in Denver, Colorado. The six sponsoring societies have developed a series of program tracks with the theme “Celebrating 20 Spatial Years”. Presentations and workshops are designed to appeal to a broad community of GIS users, surveyors, and other interested technology professionals. The professional societies and organizations share a dedication to promote professional development, education and general community outreach while helping people understand the uses and benefits of the technology.
