ESRI Data and ArcGIS 9.2 Tools Accurately Portray Neighborhoods in Dallas, Texas

Redlands, Calif.-In cooperation with a business reporter at the Dallas Morning News, ESRI produced information for a feature article in a recent edition that described the types of people who live, work, and consume products and services in the six-county area around Dallas, Texas. In addition to the current composition of these neighborhoods, the data was also used to predict demographic changes, such as population growth, the aging of the area population, and changes in neighborhood diversity that are likely to occur in the next five years.

ESRI’s data development team used tools in ArcGIS 9.2 and ESRI’s data products such as the 2007/2012 demographic, consumer expenditure (CEX), and consumer data; the Diversity Index; and Community Tapestry segmentation to produce the data at the ZIP Code and county geography levels. Members of the team then analyzed the data to create the profiles. Maps of the data were developed with ArcGIS Desktop to illustrate the article.

“Information about the types of people who live, work, and shop in neighborhoods is critical knowledge for anyone who must decide where to locate services, retail opportunities, and healthcare facilities,” said Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI. “Professionals in homeland security, health care and public safety organizations, government agencies, and commercial entities can all use the same types of data with ArcGIS to develop precise, timely analyses. This article is a marvelous example of how ArcGIS Desktop and data products were used to interpret and illustrate information accurately about Dallas neighborhoods. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with the Dallas Morning News on such a fascinating article.”
