GITA Opens Nominations for Its 2007 Awards Program

Aurora, Colo., Oct. 12, 2006- The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced that nominations are open for its 2007 Awards Program. The program, now in its 19th year, recognizes the many special achievements of individuals and organizations that have made contributions to GITA and the geospatial industry as a whole. All members of the global geospatial community are welcome to submit applications in any of four awards categories. The applications will be reviewed and judged by a panel of geospatial industry experts. The winners will be announced at the Opening Session of GITA's Annual Conference 30, slated for March 4-7, 2007, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. The application deadline is Nov. 10, 2006.

The four awards are the Excellence Award, the Innovator Award, the GITA Distinguished Service Award, and the Geospatial Industry Lifetime Achievement Award. The Excellence Award recognizes user organizations for their outstanding application of geospatial technology. Candidates for this award demonstrate dedication, insight, and a high degree of initiative in implementing multifaceted geospatial systems that incorporate multiple applications. As its name implies, the Innovator Award recognizes innovation in its many forms. Winners in this category demonstrate the successful implementation of a new and original geospatial application or technology. The GITA Distinguished Service Award is bestowed on an individual for his or her extraordinary personal contribution to the mission and success of GITA. The Geospatial Industry Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor GITA presents, recognizes an individual's outstanding contribution and longstanding commitment to the geospatial industry.

Individuals may be nominated for the Distinguished Service or the Lifetime Achievement awards. Any user organization is eligible to submit an application for the Excellence Award or the Innovator Award.

"A geospatial project team can spend countless hours developing the best GIS they can for their clients," said prior GITA award recipient John A. Middlestead of DTE Energy Gas - MichCon. "There reaches a point when it's time to share the team's successes, and the GITA Awards Program is the perfect vehicle to do just that."
