Space Imaging, Denver, Colo., announced that the IKONOS satellite will celebrate its second anniversary in space on September 24. IKONOS is the world’s first commercial high-resolution Earth imaging satellite. It was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, on Sept. 24, 1999. Since then IKONOS has completed its 10,000th orbit around Earth, collected more than 20 million square kilometers of nearly cloud-free imagery and created more than 480,000 images that are stored in Space Imaging’s digital archive. On average, IKONOS collects 900 images per day. It has flown 450 kilometers around the earth and has collected images over every continent.
