Metropolitan State College of Denver Offers DVD Distance Learning 08.12.2002

The course is entitled SUR3540 - Boundary Law I.

The Surveying and Mapping Program at the Metropolitan State College of Denver has just porduced the first course for distance learning employing DVD technology. The course is entitled SUR3540 - Boundary Law I. The author and lecturer for the course is Dr. Herbert W. Stoughton, Head of the Surveying and Mapping Program. The DVD disk is accompanied with a four hundred twenty page set of lecture notes, which were prepared for the disk. The three semester credit course is part of the formal academic program in surveying and mapping offered at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

Previously, eleven formal courses had one land surveying reciew course have been video recorded in the classroom. Presently, the second surveying course - Route Surveying - is being produced. The Auraria Media Center is providing technical support and logistics to record, edit, and produce the DVD's. The project's purpose is to provide surveing and mapping courses to individual students located at remote, off-campus sites. Funding to produce this course was provided by the Colorado Commission of Higher Education for the Rural Education Access Program.

The Surveying and Mapping Program at the Metropolitan State College of Denver is the only four-year academic program offered in Colorado. Graduates have found career opportunities wiht Federal, state, and local government agencies; the construction industry; and in consulting surveying and mapping organizations.

Dr. Stoughton holds professional licensure as a land surveyor and professional engineer in several states, and is an ASPRS certified photogrammetrist. Prior to joining the MSCD faculty, Dr. Stoughton worked with the Defense Mapping Agency working on geodetic surveys worldwide; worked with consulting engineering and land surveying organizations; taught at the State University of New York and the University of Michigan; and performed mapping, engineering, and construction surveys for regional public utilities. He has authored technical books. technical literature reviews, and technical papers. He has been an active member and officer of state and national professional societies.
