Japan’s Geographical Survey Institute (GSI) purchased more than 100 of Trimble’s 5700 Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) receivers (Trimble, Sunnyvale, Calif.) to expand its GPS based network. GPS data from the 5700 CORS receivers supports existing monitoring systems and also provides real-time information that aids in producing Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) data. In addition to collecting GPS data, the network provides Japanese surveyors with survey control points that can be accessed online. Japan’s network is used to monitor earthquake activity and the Earth’s crust movement in Japan.
