SPOT Imaging, Reston, Va., plans to launch an “imaging” satellite in April 2002. The satellite, SPOT 5, will provide digital elevation models of any location on the planet. Digital elevation models are used as part of the $12 billion simulation market including civilian and military flight simulation, defense mission planning and other visualization-based applications. SPOT 5 will be capable of producing up to 80 percent of the required elevation models to support image-based 3D mapping business worldwide. SPOT 5’s other sensors will produce black and white imagery at 2.5m and 5m resolutions, color imagery at 10m and 20m resolutions and daily coverage of the entire planet at 1 km resolution.
