ABET Updates on Accreditation Issues

One action involved the ABET Board of Directors voting to change the name of the Related Accreditation Commission.

On November 3, 2001, the ABET Board of Directors met in Incline Village, Nevada, and took various actions. In particular, the ABET Board of Directors voted to change the name of the Related Accreditation Commission (RAC) to the Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC). The change is being implemented immediately in correspondence and program listings but the transition will take some time. With regard to surveying, the revised ABET listings show the information summarized below. Anyone can access the ABET web site to view same. The process is:

1. Go to www.abet.org 2. Click on “accreditation” then “accredited programs.” 3. From there the viewer will need to visit the commission listings separately. 4. In each case, the surveying program listings are found using a search by discipline. 5. The Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) lists no surveying programs. 6. The Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) lists 6 surveying programs. 7. The Applied Science Accreditation Commission (ASAC) lists 7 surveying programs. 8. The Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC) lists 8 surveying programs.

Notes: 1. The surveying program at New Mexico State University is currently counted in two commissions. The RAC “Surveying” accreditation at NMSU is being allowed to lapse because the NMSU “Surveying Engineering” program was recently evaluated and accredited by the EAC.

2. The TAC accredits both 2- and 4-year programs. Of the 8 programs listed under TAC, two of them are 4-year programs and the remaining six are 2-year programs. According to the ABET web site listing on November 20, 2001, surveying programs accredited by the various ABET commissions listed alphabetically are:
