ESRI is announced the availability of ArcView 8.2, the latest release of the world's leading desktop geographic information system (GIS) software. ArcView is part of ESRI's ArcGIS family of software and provides data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit geographic data. With the release of ArcView 8.2, ESRI offers two new ArcGIS extensions, data updates, and a number of enhancements to the core software.

New ArcGIS Extensions
ArcView 8.2 supports two new optional ArcGIS extensions: ArcGIS Publisher and ArcGIS StreetMap Europe. ArcGIS Publisher allows GIS users and data suppliers to easily publish and share electronic maps locally, over networks, or via the Internet. Published map files are viewable through ArcReader, a new free downloadable product from ESRI. ArcReader is also available with ArcView 8.2. ArcGIS StreetMap Europe provides powerful and easy-to-use European street map display and geocoding.

Updated ESRI Data & Maps 2002 CDs
ArcView 8.2 includes the ESRI Data & Maps 2002 CDs with eight CDs of data. All the United States census-derived layers and attributes are current with Census 2000. All the county, city, place, tract, block group, and block locations are also updated with the most current TIGER or Geographic Data Technology (GDT) boundary files. World data has been updated to reflect recent changes in international boundaries and time zones.

Key ArcView 8.2 Enhancements
The following key enhancements are also included with the ArcView 8.2 release:

  • New spatial adjustment toolbar for editing data. This toolbar within ArcView allows rubber sheeting, transformation, edgematching, and attribute transfer. Users can complement their existing editing functionality with these new tools.
  • Improved labeling and annotation management. Users can rotate labels by "angle from" and attribute field, as well as manage annotation group properties such as name, specify layer associations, and specify reference scales. In addition, new text formatting tags for dynamic labels and map annotation allow you to dynamically modify the formatting for a portion of text.
  • Enhancements to metadata. Metadata enhancements include support for the International Standards Organization (ISO) metadata standard and the ability to publish metadata using ArcIMS 4. ArcIMS 4 Metadata Services create a central, online repository for publishing and browsing metadata over the Internet. Metadata can easily be created using ArcView 8.2.
  • More efficient Internet data mining. ArcView 8.2 adds support for connecting to and using data from ArcIMS 4 Metadata Services. Mining for data on the Internet with ArcView is easy and more convenient with this new command.
  • Support for Military Grid Reference System (MGRS). MGRS grids render the grid zones and 100,000-meter boundaries necessary to refer to a location using the Military Grid Reference System. ArcView software's MGRS grids follow format guidelines established by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) and also conform to the newly adopted U.S. National Grid.
