New 3D Laser Scanning Software Tools Improve Office Productivity 08.08.2003

Cyra Technologies Inc. announced Cyclone 4.1.

Cyra Technologies Inc. announced a new version of its Cyclone suite of software, Cyclone 4.1, aimed at reducing office time to generate 2D & 3D deliverables when processing point cloud data. Cyra will also release a new version of its popular CloudWorx¿software, Cyclone CloudWorx 2.1 for AutoCAD. Cyra’s products are used to capture and provide accurate, economical “as-built” information for industrial plant, civil, and architectural professionals.

New Alignment Tool Makes Cross-Sectioning Bridges, Tunnels, and Roads Easier In Cyclone 4.1, users can now automatically create accurate linework directly from point clouds along a given alignment, or baseline. Previously, this was a complex, multi-step process. Optimized for civil engineering applications such as roads, tunnels, and bridges, other applications including buildings and process plants can also benefit from this new functionality. “One of the many advantages of using rich laser scanning data is the ability to view and manipulate cross-section views from any perspective. Since you have a continuous, high-definition representation of the scene, you can generate cross-sections at any desired stationing interval for the final 2D or 3D deliverable,” stated Diane Hum, Software Product Manager for Cyra. These productivity enhancements have already been realized by Cyclone 4.1 beta customers, reducing point cloud processing time by as much as 50%.

The feature uses standard alignment notation and works with alignments of any length containing both tangent and horizontal curve sections. “These enhancements also add confidence in the final deliverable, and the results can be delivered faster than ever before, which is paramount in construction applications,” adds Hum.

More Cyclone 4.1 Features Aimed at Optimizing Office Productivity
Cyclone’s popular Virtual Surveyor tool that lets users apply feature codes to points within a scan has been enhanced. Cyclone 4.1 will let users edit point numbers and add fields as needed, as well as assign x,y,z point values. These enhancements will allow faster and more flexible creation of 2D and 3D maps, regardless of the software used to process final linework. Users working with building and architectural applications can take advantage of a more optimized “patch” or plane creation tool for creating fast and accurate models of building facades. Finally, animations of 3D data created in Cyclone can now be directly output in .AVI (Audio Visual Interleave) format. Previously, additional software and processing steps were required to allow viewing in .avi applications. Now users can conveniently create appealing project “fly-throughs” from start to finish, allowing for immediate viewing and sharing with clients.

CloudWorx enhancements add automation and accuracy for processing scans directly in CAD Cyclone CloudWorx Pro 2.1 for AutoCAD introduces automatic interference checking of proposed 3D CAD models against as-built point cloud data directly in the AutoCAD environment. Previously, such clash detection using CloudWorx was limited to visual detection only. Clashes between the point clouds and the design model can be easily identified and highlighted; adjustments can be made to the design plan to reflect this information. This feature is especially valuable in plant applications.

Another important addition in CloudWorx Pro 2.1 is the ability to quickly & accurately fit intersecting planes as lines. Previously users were restricted to tracing over point cloud slices to create 2D lines. Now users can optionally best fit 2D CAD line work to match slices of point cloud data, providing added quality assurance for 2D as-built drawings from laser scanning.
