MoreThe U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Special Programs Administration (RSPA) features a National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS) on the Internet at www.npms.rspa.dot.gov.
The NPMS is a geographic information system that maps data such as natural gas transmission pipelines, trunk lines and natural gas facilities in offshore and onshore territories of the United States. The project was a collaborative effort by RSPS’s Office of Pipeline Safety (OPS), federal and state agencies, and the pipeline industry. The system aids users to increase their knowledge of the areas surrounding pipelines, in the inspection of pipelines, and to better execute pipeline planning and emergency response.
The OPS has data on approximately 78 percent of the nation’s hazardous liquid pipeline and 30 percent of the natural gas pipeline. OPS will continue to work with pipeline associated organizations and pipeline operators to maintain pipeline data.
