Photo Science Inc. Acquires Hoffman & Company Inc. 06.28.2002

The acquisition creates the largest full-service photogrammetry firm in Georgia and one of the largest in the Southeastern U.S.

Photo Science Inc. announced he acquisition of Hoffman & Company Inc., creating the largest full-service photogrammetry firm in Georgia and one of the largest in the Southeastern U.S.

Hoffman & Company Inc., founded in 1969, has been providing state-of-the-art photogrammetric mapping, aerial photography, digital imaging, and GPS surveying throughout Georgia and the Southeast for more than three decades. Photo Science, based in Lexington, KY is no stranger to Atlanta. A national firm providing photogrammetry, surveying and GIS, Photo Science opened the Norcross, GA office in 1996, which has grown to 38 people in less than six years. The combined staff means more than 80 photogrammetrists, surveyors and mapping professionals will be located in the Atlanta metro area.

Hoffman & Company will maintain its current office location in Smyrna, while Photo Science staff will remain in Norcross. “Keeping sister offices on the opposite sides of Atlanta will allow us an extra measure of responsiveness,” explains Photo Science president, Mike Ritchie, P.E., RLS, CP. “We are now more convenient for clients who want to drop by our offices to see production or review projects and for mobilizing our survey crews to sites throughout Georgia.”

Candace Phelps, president and former owner of Hoffman & Company will resign her position in mid-July to be married and leave the Atlanta area. The firm will continue to be known as Hoffman or HCI through the transition.

The union of these two photogrammetry powerhouses produces some decided advantages:

  • Together the firms have a total of 15 Certified Photogrammetrists, Professional Land Surveyors in eight states, and Registered Professional Engineers in multiple states.
  • Photo Science has a strong background in GIS and image analysis. In Atlanta, Photo Science has 10 staff dedicated exclusively to GIS functions, adding a capability that Hoffman didn’t offer.
  • Hoffman brings locally-based aerial photography capabilities and a photo lab to Photo Science’s clients.
  • Hoffman’s Z/I Imaging high resolution roll-feed scanner will provide local state-of-the-art scanning technology to all Photo Science projects.
