HP announced the volume availability of its Intel Itanium 2-based workstations running Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003.
With this offering, developers can create powerful Itanium 2-based technical and business applications for fields such as mechanical computer-aided design and analysis (MCAD/CAE), scientific research, oil and gas, imagery analysis and software development. The offering benefits customers by providing a single desktop from which high-performing 32- and 64-bit applications can be utilized.
Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 takes advantage of the larger memory and higher floating point performance of the 64-bit Itanium architecture while providing a single source base for both 32- and 64-bit environments. Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 is available on both the HP Workstation zx2000 and zx6000.
"By working with strategic partners such as Microsoft, we are able to bring our customers increased compatibility and productivity on Itanium 2-based HP workstations," said Jim Zafarana, vice president of worldwide marketing, HP Workstation Business Unit. "The single operating system running both technical and business applications is designed to allow our customers to decrease desktop hardware, training and IT costs while increasing performance."
"Our Unigraphics NX application provides customers a total engineering solution that allows them to map their product cycle from initial concept, through design, simulation and engineering," said Chuck Grindstaff, president of PLM products, EDS/PLM. "HP is enabling us to offer our leading customers the ability to run larger data sets and to more efficiently simulate and model their products and production processes. Through a single desktop for 32-bit and 64-bit, as well as for technical and business applications, we expect to see a quick return on investment."
"Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003 in combination with HP Itanium 2 workstations offers customers an ideal platform to meet the demands of next-generation, high-performance computing applications," said Brian Valentine, senior vice president, Microsoft Corp. "This offering should provide our customers the benefits of technical computing combined with robust Windows-based business productivity tools in a single platform."
"The Itanium 2 processor provides outstanding scalability, reliability and unmatched performance for enterprise and technical computing," said Lisa Graff, director of enterprise processor marketing, Intel Enterprise Platform Group. "HP's announcement today meets the needs of the most demanding customers with a high performing and scalable workstation platform."
