Leica Geosystems, Norcross, Ga., introduced a new booklet titled “Surveying Made Easy” that describes the basic principles of surveying in a quick, easy-to-understand format. The 36-page booklet features two key surveying instruments, levels and total stations, and discusses their use in routine survey tasks. In particular, the user will learn: the main features of these instruments; key points to consider when measuring with a level or with a total station; what effects are caused by instrument errors; how to recognize such errors, determine their origin and eliminate them; and how to perform simple surveying jobs. The use of levels and total stations is illustrated by a series of practical examples, including aligning from the mid-point, measuring slopes and measuring right-angles. In addition, application programs, such as calculating areas, staking out, remote heights, tie distances and free-station surveys, are described.
