Trimble Introduces the BD950 RTK Compact GPS Card

Trimble introduced the BD950, a real-time kinematic (RTK) compact GPS card for high-precision guidance and control applications. Featuring extremely low power and a small form factor, the BD950 receiver is designed to allow OEMs and system integrators to easily add centimeter-level positioning to specialized or custom hardware solutions.

The announcement was made at the Institute of Navigation (ION) National Technical Meeting.

“The BD950 is ideal for system integrators who need a small, accurate and low-power GPS solution," said J?rgen Kliem, Trimble's division vice president of survey for Trimble's Geomatics and Engineering Division. “It is easy to integrate and the perfect choice for a wide range of positioning applications in the agriculture, construction, mining, marine, survey, GIS, and seismic markets.”

With the lowest power consumption of any dual-frequency RTK GPS/WAAS/EGNOS receiver on the market today, the BD950 uses less than 1.5 watts of power. The card's extremely low power requirement results in longer battery life, less heat generation, increased component life, and a more portable end-user product.

The BD950 is accurate and fast with the highest level of precision. Dynamic platforms, such as autonomous machinery, require virtually instantaneous position reports multiple times per second. The receiver provides horizontal accuracies of 20 mm and vertical accuracies of 30 mm. This accuracy is complemented by its responsiveness. The BD950 delivers positions to guidance or control loop software with a latency of less than 20 milliseconds.

Interfacing and configuration is easy with the BD950. The card is designed to plug right into an application with minimal development. An easy-to-use application file interface enables the receiver to be completely programmed with a single command. The BD950 can also be configured by a Windows-based Configuration Toolbox and or MS Controller software which is included with the receiver starter kit. Multiple configurations can be stored as files and activated when needed.

Another advantage offered by the BD950 is that it is easily upgradable. With only a password, a customer may purchase a lower cost basic L1 receiver and later upgrade to a full L1/L2 RTK unit.

Trimble’s new BD950 GPS compact card is available now through Trimble’s Geomatics and Engineering Division worldwide sales organization.
