Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews ...
Last year, I had the great pleasure of talking with Milt Denny, and he commented about how many surveyors are working solo these days with the aid of GPS, robotics, etc. He stressed the point that if so many surveyors are working solo, who will be teaching the next generation of surveyors?
Last week, I had an interesting revelation. I realized that I am doing my part and passing on the tradition and education that was given to me. I was trained by a surveyor about 10 years older than me, and now I am training a surveyor 10 years younger than myself.
My old boss went to Ohio State and was taught surveying the "old school" way. He grew through the technology as it was thrown at him. When I graduated from the University of Akron in 2000, I thought the technology was crazy back then, and look at it now.
Today, I find myself teaching my intern, who is also from the University of Akron, the "old school" methods I was taught from my old mentor.
This is exactly what Milt was talking about, and I feel proud to be able to do my part.
Joe Fenicle, PS

Sight Lines: A Land Surveyor by Any Other Name by Kristi Grahl
Discussions on what land surveyors should call themselves are becoming increasingly common as many surveyors seek to broaden their scope beyond boundary surveying by offering scanning, modeling, GIS and other services. From my perspective, a change in terminology could be a good move for a profession dogged by value perception issues and education problems.
Channeling data with a bird's eye view of our organizations' strategies and processes as well as those of the wider community will lead us on a journey of new discoveries rather than down the beaten path of ownership resolution.
Letters: Traversing the Law - May 09"Just received my May 2009 POB. The article by Mr. Lucas, 'Missing the Mark,' is the same as his others--always entertaining and sometimes informative."
