Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews ...
Every year when my birthday rolls around, my husband asks me what I want.
Every year, my answer is the same: Write me a poem. While this scenario has happened way too many times (we've known each other since I was 15), I'm still waiting for that darn thing to materialize. He is an artistic fellow, but--admittedly--writing is not the medium he chooses for expression.
During my somewhat shorter time with POB, I've grown to recognize and appreciate the creativity and artistic talent of land surveyors and mappers. And I am proud that POB dedicates a page of our magazine to feature our readers' talent whether drawing, painting, photography, or, as it is in the April issue, poetry, in recognition of National Poetry Month (reprinted below).
In addition to POB's featured poet, Robert A. Dyer, a quick search of the Internet will produce a treasure trove of land surveyor poets, including Englishman Richard Lower (1782-1865), Scottish poet John Morrison (1782-1853), and American Frank Stanford (1948-1978). Even NOAA has a page on its Web site that asks, "What do poetry, engineers, and scientists have in common? The NOAA Poetry Corner
, home of weather poems, survey poems, and ocean poems written by the men and women who served in NOAA or its ancestor agencies."
No matter what your medium, I invite you to submit your works of surveying-related art so we can feature it on our Fun & Games page in future issues.
Speaking of the future, when my birthday rolls around later this year, the birthday-present scenario will repeat for the umpteenth time. Hey, one can always hope-or, as poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744) so eloquently put it, "Hope springs eternal."

Lost Without You by Robert A. Dyer
Here's a little something; it's rather sublime About being in the right place at the right time It's all about numbers and trigonometry Computers, math and relativity
It's about a profession that's centuries old Without it, no way this story would be told Defining space on sea, sky and land Deciding what belongs into which hand
A tale of property and rights, oil and gas A way to connect today to the past Proving what's rightfully yours and mine Keeping life in a truly straight line
Tying things together while we expand Not spoken of often but always in demand Letting us grow by leaps and bounds Shaping countries and building towns
Lewis and Clark, George Washington, too Just some you may know to mention a few Conquering land and shaping Earth they did Just look back and marvel at the pyramid
With chains and rods, optics of glass They measured our lives and recorded our past Technology advanced and changed our tools Paving the way to find fossil fuels
Out on the sea, guiding ships and tankers Massive structures bound by anchors Allowing man to go and explore The treasures beneath the ocean floor
He keeps us on line, on track to the inch His work's no big deal; to him it's a cinch A writer of fact, a cartographic purveyor A man for the ages known as the surveyor

Sight Lines: Your Co-Worker, Your Client by Christine Grahl
With so many companies still wielding the layoff knife, it's understandable to want to do everything within our power to try to keep our jobs-even, perhaps, resorting to underhanded measures. But a far better strategy is to treat your co-workers as your clients.
Like it or not, change is occurring in our profession. Are we embracing that change or, like the wagon wheel makers of a hundred years ago, hanging on to what we used to know until we are left hopelessly behind?
Do you have a viewpoint on a topic of interest that you would like to see discussed in Opinion? E-mail your column (approx. 300-700 words) to pobeditor@bnpmedia.com. Columns will be posted at the editor's discretion. Follow this
