POB eNews Vol. 22 No. 8

March 19, 2008

EDITOR'S NOTE

pob0308_turning08Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews...

Happy National Surveyors Week! Usually, when people are celebrated for their accomplishments, they get to sit back and relax. But it doesn't work that way for surveyors during National Surveyors Week.

The purpose of Surveyors Week is to bring visibility to the profession. That means this is no time to be humble. It's time to boast, which is not hard to do. How many other professionals can say that the work they do lays the very foundation of society? How many other professionals can say they follow in the footsteps of some of America's most honored forefathers-and, I trust, foremothers?

So, I encourage you to unabashedly promote your profession this third week of March. To help, the NSPS has provided an excellent resource. The Surveyors Week Publicity Handbook (www.nspsmo.org/news_events/nat_sur_week.shtml ) contains a wealth of information on reaching out to the public with activities that will spark their interest in surveying. It also provides practical guidelines on media etiquette and how to get the media to cover your activities so that you can have an even greater impact in your community.

National Surveyors Week comes just once a year. So, consider what you can do this week to promote your profession, your fellow surveyors and the rich heritage you share.

 -Wendy Lyons, Associate Editor

P.S. If  you promoted the profession during National Surveyors Week, I encourage you to send me an e-mail detailing what you did so I can pass along the news.

Take a moment to vote in our Quick Poll at www.pobonline.com. This month, we want to know how endangered you feel your life has been on the job in the last year.
