Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews...
More than 30 exhibitors related to the surveying market are displaying their offe rings this week at the annual World of Concrete trade show in Las Vegas. Berntsen, Carlson, Leica, SECO, Sokkia, Topcon and Trimble join the roster. For four short days (they really are short), attendees, including staff members from
POB and Site Prep
magazines, will be scouring the many halls and pavilions in search of news and products that will help you succeed in business. News releases are already making their way home to report to you. Carlson Software’s new Carlson Layout
tool, designed to ease and speed the calculations required to lay out the foundations, columns and utilities of architectural buildings, kicks off our report from the show. Stay tuned to our Web site for more.
After World of Concrete, we will be present in one form or another at a myriad of shows during this busy show season. Just to name a few: numerous state society shows throughout January and February, ILMF 2008 hosted by the International LiDAR Mapping Forum (Feb. 21-22), SPAR 2008 hosted by Spar Point Research LLC (March 3-5), the ACSM/LSAW 2008 Annual Conference (March 4-9) and CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2008 (March 11-15). See our complete
calendar of events for more. How will we get through it all? By staying focused and knowing our purpose. That purpose, in simple terms, is to gather news that will help you.
If you know your purpose at any given trade show, you can use the best of your time. If your goal is to obtain CEUs or PDHs, specific sessions rate higher on the list. If you want to gain information on new technology, software and accessories to help in the field and office, more time will be spent on the exhibit floor. If you need to make contacts or exchange ideas with local, regional or national peers, networking opportunities will be placed at the top of the list.
And if you have a story or experience to share with the editors of the leading national surveying and mapping publication, we hope your goal will be to find us roaming the halls and classrooms. We’d love to hear from you.
Happy trails, Lieca N. Hohner Editor
Clarification: Last week’s eNews contained a misleading statement: "… the GPS receivers currently used by surveyors cannot pick up the L2C code." Dr. Reilly intended to state that a solution cannot currently be had from the L2C frequency alone.
"The Department of Defense is building up the number of operational satellites with the second frequency," Dr. Reilly said. "In the days of Block I, there had to be seven satellites on orbit before surveyors could have a window with four satellites visible. With five IIR-M satellites on orbit, and only two scheduled for launch in 2008, a solution with L2C is still down the road." We recommend GNSS receiver users check with their dealer to clarify what their receivers can track now with the satellites currently on orbit and in the future as the satellite array expands.
P.S. Take a minute to vote in our Quick Poll at www.pobonline.com. This month, we want to know how many industry events you plan on attending in 2008. |
