GUEST EDITORIAL: New Newsletter Launched! |
Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews...
My friends at POB magazine are giving me this opportunity to introduce my new project, "The Lucas Letter™." This is a monthly subscription newsletter dedicated to legal issues affecting the surveying and engineering community.

Over the past several years, I have had the good fortune to travel across the country and meet many surveyors face to face. One request that I repeatedly receive is for a source that provides a more in-depth study of the law and access to critical up-to-date cases. The Lucas Letter will be dedicated to that task.
Each month, I will bring relevant case law to the table as we systematically explore topics that we must deal with on a daily basis. The full text of the cases will be available for download so that subscribers can begin to build their own "law library" or add to their existing one.
In the coming months, I will be adding more cases to the newsletter library from across all 50 jurisdictions dealing with the same issues covered in the newsletter. These, too, will be available to subscribers so that relevant law from your state is at your fingertips.
I invite you to join me at www.jnlucaspls.com/TheLucasLetter.html.
-Jeff Lucas

Surveying on Vacation Update:
In my last eNews column, I asked for vacation photos demonstrating how you take surveying on vacation. So far, the response has been great, and I'm enjoying seeing your photos, reading the stories behind them and getting to know our readers better.
In fact, I'm enjoying it so much, I want even more of them to compile into a Web exclusive to commemorate the end of summer. So, keep them coming to lyonsw@bnpmedia.com. Make sure to include a short explanation of where you are, what you're doing, who you're doing it with and how it relates to surveying. |

Our August issue is now online!
From the site of a major disaster to the site of one of nature's most beautiful miracles, this month's feature stories highlight the diverse nature of surveying. Our cover story, Rebuild and Recover
, tells how surveyors using advanced technology facilitated a speedy recovery effort following last year's tragic I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Then, A Grand Adventure
takes you along on a three-man surveying expedition into the depths of the Grand Canyon. No story would be complete without some great photos to illustrate. So, check out our Web exclusive, Picture This!, for some great tips on utilizing your camera on the job and off.
As always, no issue would be complete without the insight of our regular industry experts, Jim Reilly,
Michael Binge, Milton Denny, and
Jeff Lucas, and our guest columnists Dennis J. Mouland
and Louis A. Raimondi.
If you're thinking about purchasing any GIS Software, before making a decision, click to POB's annual

Lyme disease hits close to home
Like many sufferers of Lyme disease, Canadian land surveyor Bob Doucet doesn't recall ever seeing a tick on his body. Like many others who work in the woods or fields, he was unaware of the danger that could lurk there in the form of tiny mites.
The Prize: Illinois oilman strikes paydirt again For years, Ben Webster criss-crossed Southern Illinois as a land surveyor before purchasing his first oil production company in 1999. This spring, he hit paydirt--for the second time--when he tapped a reservoir estimated to hold 1.5 million barrels of oil.
