POB eNews Vol. 24 No. 6

December 17, 2008

EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews ...  pob0308_turning08

Whether you've been naughty or nice this year, POB wants you to prosper in 2009. So we are offering you a holiday gift that I suspect even Ebenezer Scrooge couldn't shake a stick at.

Earlier this year, POB magazine partnered with Missouri University of Science and Technology for "Earn More Dollars. Make More Sense," a POB Webinar series with earnable professional development hours.

37649398Register by Wednesday, Dec. 24, and enter the coupon code HOLIDAY, and you'll receive a special holiday tuition of $29 for your choice of Webinars. That's a $20 discount off the regular price.

Choose from three business-themed Webinars that are designed to help you be more effective in a down economy:

The series launches on Jan. 22 with Joseph V.R. Paiva's "Are You Keeping Up with Technology, Or Is Technology Outrunning You?" The Webinar will review leading edge-but functional-advanced field and office surveying technologies, including ways in which these technologies work and how to apply them. Benefits, drawbacks and hidden costs will be identified as well as changes to business processes that may need to be implemented to maximize their effectiveness. On Feb. 17, Jeff Lucas will present "Better Business Practices and the Law," and on March 19, Gary Kent, PS, will present "Managing Your Business in Challenging Times." 120x60

The three Webinars will take place from 2-3 p.m. EST and will be followed by a live Q-and-A session with attendee-submitted questions. POB Editor Christine L. Grahl will be moderating. Regular tuition is $49 per Internet connection. The cost of the 1.0 PDH credit is included in tuition.

To be endorsed by Missouri University of Science and Technology, participants must pass the quiz after each Webinar with a score of 80 percent or better. A certificate of completion from the university will be provided upon request. Individuals are responsible for submitting the course to their state licensing board for approval. For more information or to register, go to www.pobonline.com.

Remember, toys and games come and go, but the gift of education creates a lifetime of opportunities.

Happy holidays and a prosperous new year,

             Wendy Lyons, eNews Editor

Sight Lines:  Where is the Diversity?
A Blog by Christine Grahl, 12/16/08

A reader called me last week with the question, "Why doesn't POB highlight many women and racial minorities in its articles?" The quick and easy answer is that we are largely reflecting our audience: As evidenced by the attendees at numerous conferences and trade shows, the vast majority of individuals in the surveying profession in the U.S. are white males. While women and minorities have certainly made inroads over the past few decades, their numbers remain relatively small in comparison. But why is this so? To read on, click to Sight Lines.

Model-in-ACADWebFARO's high definition Photon Laser Scanner provided an efficient, quick method for surveying and documenting as-built conditions of a 7,000 sq. ft. mansion and surrounding landscape.

The Photon's speed enabled the entire house to be scanned--in full color 3D--and rendered in just 20 man-hours.

With FARO's Cloud software plug-in, the data was easily exported to AutoCAD and used as a template to generate full 2D and 3D models.

Problem: Project Management: Client Relations

What is the standard traditionally adopted by the courts to determine what constitutes negligence by a land surveyor when providing service to a client?

(A) whether a surveyor exercised the degree of care that a surveyor of ordinary skill and prudence would exercise under similar circumstances
(B) whether a surveyor made errors in judgment that resulted in damage to others
(C) whether a surveyor's work was reviewed and found to fall short of absolute correctness
(D) whether a surveyor exercised the degree of care that the client expected
