POB eNews Vol. 22 No. 10

May 1, 2008

EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews...  pob0308_turning08

Earlier this week, Kenneth Roberts, PLS, and his team in Idaho Falls found themselves in the money.

"We received the check for $2,000," Roberts said in an e-mail to POB Editor Lieca Hohner. "Thank you all VERY MUCH! We (the crew) split it, and we're all very happy tonight and partying down here in Idaho Falls."

Our team here at POB shares his excitement. What I'm referring to, of course, is POB's Highlights in Surveying contest, now in its fourth year.

And on a personal level, I'm delighted to be part of a magazine that acknowledges, promotes and celebrates the accomplishments of its readers. I congratulate everyone who submitted a project to the competition. And even though we had an excellent number of contest entries, I encourage even more of you to enter next year. As Lieca, my editor, says, "A cool project, an innovative approach or an impressive team can all constitute a great story."

So, as you go about your daily business in 2008, plan on sharing the story behind one of your projects.  It just might pay off-literally.

-Wendy Lyons, Associate Editor

P.S. POB will begin to take 2009 contest submissions this fall. In the meantime, be sure to check out the 2008 winning entry in our June issue.

Our May issue is now online!

pob0508_cover

In addition to three informative conference recaps, the May issue includes Requiem for a Schooner, which tells the tale of how surveyors manned the deck to save a historic treasure from the permanent grip of Davy Jones' Locker. If you're more of a landlubber and prefer to cross the vast waters via a nice sturdy bridge, then you'll be interested in Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, which reports the results of transient-deformation monitoring performed on Michigan's mighty Mackinac Bridge.

This month's edition also includes contributions from industry experts Jim Reilly, Jeff Lucas, Milton Denny , Finola Bianco and Joe Paiva.

Last, but not least, if you're wondering how your salary and benefits stack up against others in your profession, wonder no more. Simply click to Professional Paybacks  to view the results of POB 's exclusive 2008 Salary & Benefits Survey and compare.
