Welcome to this week's edition of the POB eNews...
The numbers are staggering: 34,273 dead after Cyclone Nargis and the resulting storm surge hits Myanmar, another 27,836 people are still missing; 11,921 dead after an earthquake rocks China's Sichuan province; and close to home, tornadoes tear through America's heartland killing at least 11 people. Sadly, the numbers grow.
Earlier this week, POB received news of the formation of BuildAction, a disaster management initiative created by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Headquartered in London, England, RICS is the largest organization of property, land and construction professionals with 40,000 members in 146 countries, including the United States.
The idea for BuildAction was born out of the enormous number of calls RICS received from surveyors of various disciplines wanting to volunteer their time and skill in relief efforts following Thailand's devastating tsunami in 2004.
BuildAction brings together building industry professionals and humanitarian workers to help vulnerable communities around the world prepare for and recover from disasters. Its aim is to bridge the gap between the immediate humanitarian relief that occurs after disasters and the long-term reconstruction process that follows.
While we all can send donations, thoughts and prayers to those whose lives have been devastated by these natural disasters, you may want to do even more. Consider sending yourself. All you need is your surveying skill. BuildAction will provide humanitarian training for individuals with no disaster-specific experience. For more information or to sign up, go to www.buildaction.org.
