Web Exclusive: Construction Companies Respond to Flood Disaster in Iowa
In early June, the rain and flooding in the Midwest sent the state into an emergency. This article
has been updated with information about how Terex provided
equipment to help out, along with Case Construction, New Holland Construction
and Godwin Pumps. These members of the industry came to the Midwest's aid by
helping with the levees, relieving floodwaters in areas of need and providing
assistance and comfort for those in need.

Machine Management
Construction machines are costly--to acquire, operate, maintain and even to manage. Use the wrong machine for the job, run one past its scheduled service hours, misdiagnose a series of similar failures, rent a machine out only to have it misused, unused or sitting onsite with its engine idling… and you’ve got problems. Machine monitoring and remote management help solve some of these problems.

Editor’s View: Here Comes the Sun

Virtual Stringline: Hindsight on the Site
There has been a lot of discussion about the
requirement in many states to have a professional engineer or licensed surveyor
certify 3D data prep models for GPS machine control and related construction work.
Inevitably, events are introduced onsite that render a license completely
ineffective and which a professional engineer (PE) or professional licensed
surveyor (PLS) cannot resolve. Such events often tend to involve human error.
In this column I will share some of the stories about these errors and the
lessons learned from them.
