ProFlex 500 gets a workout from Canadian Armed Forces prior to Afghanistan deployment.

Ottowa, Canada – The Canadian Armed Forces Mapping and Charting Establishment, which provides geospatial information and geomatics support to the Canadian Armed Forces and is headquartered in Ottowa, has selected the recently introduced Magellan Professional ProFlex 500, a powerful and flexible dual-frequency GNSS receiver, to perform a variety of survey missions. The first 15 of the newly delivered ProFlex 500 receivers have been deployed to Afghanistan for static surveys to set control points to support LIDAR flyby operations. Subsequent missions planned for the ProFlex 500 include RTK surveying operations using the unit’s backpack kit with its quick-release system to easily separate the receiver from the antenna allowing easy removal of the backpack.

The purchase of the ProFlex 500 was made through Gemini Positioning Systems Ltd., the exclusive Canadian distributor for the Magellan Professional Survey, GIS and OEM GPS navigation and positioning products. Gemini provides high-quality GPS system integration, specialized custom GPS and satellite applications and installations, and engineering consulting services. Through an extensive sub-dealer network across Canada, Gemini provides convenient access and full customer support for the Magellan Professional GPS product line. According to Gerry Belanger, director of Gemini's Eastern Sales Office, the Mapping and Charting Establishment selected the ProFlex 500 in a competitive bid because the unit met or exceeded all the tough military specs, Gemini was the lowest bidder and the product could be delivered in a tight timeframe.

About the ProFlex 500
Adaptable to a wide variety of applications requiring precise positioning, the ProFlex 500 is designed for multiple applications: surveying using a backpack, marine positioning, machine control, and base stations. The heart of the ProFlex 500 is, a 75-channel GNSS board that tracks dual-frequency GPS and GLONASS signals as well as SBAS ranging signals, all of which are optimally processed by the patented BLADE technology for high-performance RTK accuracy and optimal operational productivity. The ProFlex 500 is a high-end GNSS receiver with a unique set of embedded communication features for maximum flexibility and bad weather resistance. It contains completely integrated GSM, UHF and Bluetooth for wireless communications as well as Ethernet, RS-232/422 and USB connections. All output connections are optically isolated to prevent problems with installation in shipboard or aircraft applications.

Made to withstand harsh environmental conditions, the product features the following characteristics: 100% condensing humidity proof, salt mist resistant, and shock and vibration resistant as defined in military standard MIL STD 810 F. The receiver has a rugged aluminum housing and is IP67 rated.
